Yondr Group pledges ambitious net zero goal by 2030

Yondr Group, a global leader, developer, owner operator and service provider of hyperscale data centers, has launched an ambitious sustainability plan, which includes a target to achieve net zero by 2030 for scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.

The pledge from Yondr comes as the data center sector continues to respond to global political commitments to reduce carbon emissions, alongside the challenges of increasing demand for data center capacity.

“The goals of increased data center capacity and reduced environmental impact are not mutually exclusive,” explains Yondr’s VP Energy & Sustainability, Ross McConnell. “As an ambitious and innovative data center specialist, Yondr needs to set clear and challenging targets when it comes to sustainability, and to leverage innovative thinking and technologies to enable us to achieve them. That’s exactly what we are doing with our new sustainability strategy. We have created a roadmap for achieving net zero, and we are working closely with our clients to navigate successfully towards those goals, helping our industry to tackle climate change, while enhancing data center capacity and resilience.”

In addition to pledging to achieve net zero for scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions within the next six years, Yondr’s new sustainability strategy also includes a commitment to working with the company’s clients and supply chain to support further carbon reductions across the data center value chain, incorporating scope 3 carbon emissions into the plan.

Yondr’s sustainability strategy brings together multidisciplinary expertise from across the company’s sustainability, development, design, utilities and tech teams, ensuring that carbon reduction is embedded into data center projects at every touchpoint; from site acquisition through to the operational phase and legacy planning. The company will drive innovation in the use of renewable energy, energy reduction and energy recovery strategies, aligned to the specific environment and requirements for each data center location and client. Combining industry-leading approaches to energy efficiency and renewables will be pivotal to successful delivery of the plan, along with a collaborative focus across the value chain, embracing new technologies and techniques.

“Traditionally, the data center industry has a large carbon footprint due to high consumption of energy and materials,” said Yondr’s CEO, Paul Cossell. “As the sector expands rapidly in response to increasing demands for the Cloud and AI, we need to recognise that heavy consumption is neither inevitable nor acceptable. We must respond to our planet’s climate challenges by taking a transformative approach to developing more sustainable data centers as Yondr continues to grow.

“It is encouraging to see that the whole data center industry is increasingly recognising the need to take positive, measurable and verifiable action to reduce carbon emissions. Transformation will not be simple, but it will be rewarding, and at Yondr all of our corporate functions will have a role to play in enabling both our business and our partners to embrace change.”
